Artist’s
Background - David Lovemore
David was born in Africa and with his family came
to England in 1984. He grew up in what was then Southern Rhodesia
and attended boarding schools in Cape Town. He worked for the Rhodesia
Railways and later for a shipping company in Cape Town where in
his early 30’s an accident resulted in a seriously injured
hand. The injuries changed his values and focus on life and he began
to be creative.
On arrival in England
he started teaching wood work and wood carving in a school for children
with emotional and behavioural difficulties. This was the beginning
of his exploration into wood carving and a new and exciting world
opened up and he soaked up techniques, and enthusiastically learned
about tools and the different qualities of woods. While working
part time in the school he also was given the opportunity to run
wood carving courses in Stroud, Cirencester and Cheltenham.
In 1990 a long illness and low energy meant he had to give up work
for a number of years. During the slow recovery he turned to artistic
activities and was fortunate enough to spend two years in a sculpture
studio with Gertraud Goodwin at Hoathly Hill Sculpture Studio in
Sussex. Under her expert guidance he was introduced into the sculptural
world of pure form working in clay.
Now he works both as a tutor at Amber Sculpture
Studio and as a freelance Sculptor, specialising in the mediums
of wood, stone, marble and clay.
